The line, “I was begging like a dog for the scraps of your affection,” had been drifting in my mind for quite some time. I knew that I would someday write a song around it, but, weighed down by work and life as usual, I was lacking the motivation to do it. Then, in the fall of 2023, a musician friend issued a challenge that we both write a song that month and publicly perform it. This was the kick in the ass I needed to start writing again, and within a few weeks, “Scraps” was born.
For this song, I decided to try working with a producer remotely and I chose Patrick Wörner based on his incredible work with ninazo. He understood my artistic vision immediately and I’m really proud of how it turned out. Pat is an amazing professional and such a pleasure to work with; I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a pop producer.
Musically, “Scraps” is quite a bit more complex than our last single. It was recorded in Ab Minor, 98 bpm with a progression of: i-VII-VI-III-iv-ii7b5-V in the verses and i-VI-VII-III-iv-ii7b5-V in the choruses. The bridge modulates to the parallel major: I-iii-IV-V-I-iii-vi-V. The song ends on a Picardy third, because if it’s good enough for Bach, it’s good enough for us.
The lyrics are more transparent than “So Close,” but in a nutshell, the song is about refusing to settle for less than you deserve. Hope you enjoy it!
